Israel Treiman, last year’s President of the Menory Society at Washington University at St. Louis, has won an appointment as Rhodes scholar-at-large. He will go into residence at Oxford next October for the three-year term of the scholarship, and will do reserarch work in jurisprudence.
The Rhodes Scholarships, established by the Late Cecil Rhodes to cement the friendship between England and America, are the most coveted honors open to American university students, and are awarded on the basis of personality and athletic prowess as well as brilliant scholarship. Treiman was born at Odessa, Russia, and took his A.B. and A.M. degrees at Washington University, specializing in the Classics, and afterward taking up the study of law. It is expected that he will devote part of his study at Oxford to Jewish law.
Besides being the leader of Jewish cultural activities at his University through the Menorah Society, Treiman has also participated in Jewish religious activities in the city of St. Louis, serving as assistant to Rabbi Leon Harrison.
