Schmelke Horowitz, for many years president of the Jewish community here, well-known philanthropist and founder of the Lemberg Chamber of Commerce, died here today at the age of 85.
Mr. Horowitz was one of the most distinguished representatives of the Haskalah movement in Eastern Galicia. At the age of 39 he was knighted by the Austrian government.
