Henry Morgenthau, former United States Ambassador to Turkey, has resigned as head of the Greek Refugee Settlement Commission, which administers the affairs of the Greek refugees under the League of Nations.
Mr. Morgenthau said that when he accepted the position it was for a term of one year only. The year has elapsed, and Mr. Morgenthau feels that as he has completed arrangements for a loan of from £6,000,000 to £10,000,000, to be used in aiding the refugees, the details of administering the fund should be worked out by his successor.
Mr. Morgenthau said that he had completed the work he set out to do and that now the mantle should fall on the shoulders of a younger man. He would not say who his successor would be.
The commission obtained a loan of £1,000,000, which was followed by a loan of a like sum from the Bank of England last May to carry on its work until the Winter.
The money will be used to establish the refugees in the farming districts of Macedonia with land, buildings and equipment. These ultimately will be offered to them for purchase on the instalment plan.
