An invitation is extended to any responsible Jewish national organization to appoint a committee for the purpose of making a thorough investigation at any time. The office, the books, the reports on the many activities of the Hias in Europe and America are open and such a committee will always be welcome.

This statement of the president of the Hias was issued in reply to charges made by Mr. Jacob Marinoff, editor of the “Kundes” in last week’s issue of the publication. In this issue the charge was brought that the sum of $316,000 sent by American Jews to their relatives in Europe through the offices of the Hias could not be accounted for. As a basis for these accusations, the paper published an excerpt of a letter supposedly written by Mr. Asofsky, the present manager of the Hias to Mr. Gottlieb, formerly representative of the Hias in Washington. This letter refers to Mr. Rosenthaler of the Stamford Audit Company, 565 Fifth Avenue, New York and Mr. Lichtman, a member of the same firm who, it is stated, were sent by the New York office of the Hias to investigate the accounts of the offices in Europe.
