10,000 Families Will Be Settled in Crimea and Ukraine, but Ural and Caucasus Plan Must Be Abandoned,

The plan to settle Jews on the land in the districts of the Ural and the Caucasus cannot be entertained. The land settling work in Russia, however, is proceeding according to plans, Dr. Bernard, Kahn, European Director of the Joint Distribution Committee, stated today in an interview with the representative of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, upon his arrival here. Dr. Kahn hopes that during the year 1926, 10,000 families will be settled in Crimea and the Ukraine.

During the last three months the Joint Distribution Committee has spent $400,000 for colonization work and $70,000 for other purposes in Russia. It is now estimated that the settlement of one family on the land in Russia costs about $1,000, provided that the settler has had some farming experience, Dr. Kahn stated.

Since the month of November, the Join Foundation of the Joint Distribution Committee and the lea has advanced credit to Jewish cooperatives in Poland to the amount of $350,000. The Joint Distribution Committee has advanced the amount of $175,000 for schools, child care and other institutions.

The position, however, of the Polish Jews is unbearable, Dr. Kahn stated. The prospects are uncertain, Polish Jewry needs the greatest relief efforts.

Dr. Kahn will meet Bernard Flexner, president of the Palestine Economic Corporation, who is proceeding to Palestine on March 3.
