The Jewish population of Whitechapel was greatly puzzled by the appearance of a stranger who distributed money in the district.
The stranger came to Buxton Street, Brick Lane, on several evenings and distributed sums of between £ 10 and £ 15 among the people in the street. The sums distributed totaled about £ 100 on each visit.
The ” Daily News” stated yesterday that the stranger is believed to be Bernard Baron, Jewish philanthropist who recently gave large gifts for charity, including £ 10,000 for the Hebrew University.
When asked by a representative of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Mr. Baron declined to affirm or deny the report.
