The Hakoah soccer team defeated a picked team of the St. Louis Soccer League here Saturday afternoon with a score of 4 to 2. A crowd of 7,000 cheered the play of the visitors. They played a short passing game which was featured by many novel movements.
In the first period the visitors scored four times. In the second period they were held scoreless, but their manoeuvring was so skillfull that they were in possession of the ball the greater part of the time. This period was productive of the best soccer. St. Louis braced and scored one goal, bringing the count to 4 to 2. On each occasion when St. Louis broke through the visitor’s defense, which was at rare intervals, the home team came close to scoring.
The game was preceded by colorful ceremonies in which the captains of the opposing teams exchanged flags. national anthems were played by a band and the teams posed for photographers.
At the start the Hakoah showed a marked superiority in weaving through the enemy defense. The player used the right wing a great deal more than the life and fed the ball to Neufeld for scoring chances on which he came very close to registering. After four minutes of play, captain Hausler, eluding two defenders, bluffed a pass and then whipped a fast shot in the corner of the goal, catching the guardian unprepared.
Neufeld followed with a shot from close quarters, and before the half was over Centre Forward Shoffield and Gruenwald had each scored goals, Jimmy Dunn tallied for St. Louis just before the conclusion of the half after Goal Tender Fablan had intercepted Nash’s shot.
In the latter minutes of the game play was more vigorous than in the first half, but no one was hurt and the character of football did not suffer.
