Dr. Lewis Browne, author of “Stranger Than Fiction”, sailed yesterday on the Leviathan on a world tour. On his tour Browne will write exclusively for the “Jewish Daily Bulletin.”
Dr. Browne will describe the Jewish situation in the countries which he visits in news letters to the Bulletin.
Dr. Browne will visit England, France, Switzerland, Germany. Belgium, Holland, Poland, Lithuania, Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Jugoslavia, Hungary, Austria, Italy and Spain.
Dr. Lewis Browne ranks among the foremost of the younger historians and publicists writing in English today. Although his present widespread reputation came to him only with the publication in 1925 of “Stranger Than Fiction,” his name has long been familiar to a small group through his frequent contributions to the “Freeman” the “Nation,” the “New Republic” and other publications.
Dr. Browne. who was born in England, has lived in this country since his early youth. He received his education at Yale and prepared for the Jewish ministry at the Hebrew Union College of Cincinnati. His interest in social problems led him on three occasions to leave his congregations temporarily, and go off with migratory workers, or to labor in lumber camps and steel mills. Dr. Browne has drawn maps and illustrations for text-books and lectured in theological seminaries.
Dr. Browne will return to America in November and will then proceed to Asia.
JEWISH COMMUNAL ACTIVITIES
The contract for the construction of the synagogue for the Congregation Zichran Yehuda, New York, has been awarded. The present building on the site is to be demolished and a new building will be erected, construction of which is to start immediately.
The building will be designed in the Italian Rennaissance style of architecture of brick, granite and terra cotta. The main floor is to have a lobby decorated with marble and ornamental plaster and ornamental stairs to balcony. The building will cost about $50,000.
The dedication of the new synagogue in Orlando. Fla., was attended by a large audience. Addresses were delivered by Mavor Autrey. Dr. Badger of Unitarian church. Dr. Ingram of the Methodist church of Winter Park. Father Fox of the Catholic church, Mr. Louis Bandel. Mr. A. Rapheal, and Mr. Stalberg of the Congregation Ohev Sholem, and Rabbi Samuel Benjamin.
Plans for the establishment of a center in Berkeley, Cal., to include a meeting place and home center for Jewish students at the University of California were discussed at a meeting of the California Alliance of Jewish Women at the University Y. W. C. A. It is planned to have a field secretary in charge at the center.
