Rabbi Herbert J. Samuel, of Montreal, Can., Dies at Rabbis’ Convention

Rabbi Herbert J. Samuel. Rabbi of Temple Emanuel, Montreal, Canada, died today in Asheville, where he was attending the Central Conference of American Rabbis.

Rabbi Samuel, who was 42 years old, dropped dead during the afternoon session in which he had been participating, five minutes after he had presented an amendment to a motion. The Conference was plunged into mourning by the sudden death.

Rabbi Samuel was a native of England, and a graduate of the Jew’s College, London. He had officiated in Winnipeg before accepting the Montreal pulpit. He was associate editor of “The Jew in Canada” and contributing editor of the “Canadian Jewish Review.” He leaves a wife and two daughters.

A bust of the late Kaufmann Kohler, president emeritus of the Hebrew Union College, was presented to the institution recently by Mrs. Lawrence Rukeyser, of New York City. The bust was executed by Miss Rose Kohler, daughter of the late Dr. Kohler.
