The attitude of London Jews toward the forthcoming trial of Sholom Schwartzbard was clarified at a mass meeting held at the Pavillion Theatre, called by the London Schwartzbard Defense Council. The hall was crowded to capacity.
Dr. Moses Gaster, well known Anglo-Jewish leader, who presided at the meeting, declared that although Jews cannot sanction deeds of violence they must not forget that Petlura was morally and personally responsible for the anti-Jewish massacres in the Ukraine.
Vladimir Tiomkin, well known Ukrainian Jewish leader, took exception to the recent statement of Louis Marshall, president of the American Jewish Committee, concerning the Schwartzbard case. “We won’t consult those Jews who forget the psychology and the feeling of the Jewish masses. Standing with one foot in the grave, I accuse Petlura of being responsible for the pogroms.”
The meeting unanimously adopted a resolution which, while condemning acts of violence, expresses the conviction that Petlura caused the pogroms.”
