Prospects for a new activity of the Ort, the society for the promotion of trades and agriculture among the Jews of eastern Europe, were opened up when the Ort headquarters here created a new department under the leadership of Dr. D. Lvovitch.

The purpose of the new department will be to persuade American Jews to help their European relatives by providing them with tools to carry on productive work. Jewish artisans and graduates of the Ort schools will be urged to request their American relatives to supply them with machinery and implements.

According to the plan, the Ort would become the intermediary for the transmission by American Jews of individual constructive assistance to their relatives in Eastern Europe.

Dr. Lvovitch, in describing the plan, stated: “It is impossible to send tools or machines directly from America. This is done at present through the medium of our Cooperative Tool Supply Company. It is impossible for persons living in America to procure land for relatives in Europe, and by far not every American Jew has the necessary means to purchase land for a whole family. Everybody, however, will be glad to give a part of the money required, if this sum could be advanced in several parts, while the remaining amount would be paid out in time by the relative-beneficiary.”
