Bulgarian Officials Halt Anti-jewish Outbreaks

The Jewish Sports Organization, Maccabee, of Roustchouk celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary this week and organized for the occasion a sports meeting attended also by a number of prominent non-Jewish athletes.

The festival was inaugurated with a service in the synagogue attended by representatives of all the Bulgarian sports organizations. the head of the Greek Orthodox Church, the civil and military governors of the city and leading citizens.

An attempt was made by some of the members of the anti-Semitic organization “Redna Zachtita” to incite the population against the Jews Anti-Semitic proclamation were distributed. but owing to the prompt action of the police there were no incidents. except that several persons succeeded in setting fire to the triumphal arch erected at the entrance to the Jewish quarter. They were soon traced and arrested. The Bulgarian press and population condemn the attitude of the “Rodna Zachtica” and declare that the organization is composed of entirely irresponsible people. The Bulgarian Press demands that the Government punish the anti-Semitic acitators.
