United Palestine Appeal Opens Sessions of One-day Conference in Cleveland

Five Hundred Delegates to Hear Reports and Addresses (Jewish Daily Bulletin)

More than 500 representatives from all parts of the United States are expected to attend the National Conference on Palestine which will open its sessions tonight at the Hotel Statler here. The conference is being arranged by the United Palestine Appeal, of which Judge William M. Lewis of Philadelphia is National Chairman. Sessions will continue all day Sunday and will conclude with a banquet.

The call to the conference was issued by Nathan Straus. The speakers scheduled to address the conference are Miss Henrietta Szold, newly, elected member of the Palestine Zionist Executive, Dr. Judah L. Manges, Dean of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Dr. Stephen S. Wise, Judge Julian W. Mack, Judge William M. Lewis, Louis Lipsky, Morris Rothenberg, chairman of the Keren Hayesod of America, Maurice Samuel, Rabbi Solomon Goldman, Rabbi Barnett Brickner and others.

Mr. Rothenberg will preside at the opening session tonight. Reports will be submitted by the secretary of the United Palestine Appeal, Bernard Stone, and the chairman of the Finance Committee, Samuel J. Rosensohn. According to these reports, the United Palestine Appeal has received during the past twelve months over six million dollars in pledges and cash. The actual cash amounted to $3,257,849.74. In an address at the opening session Maurice Samuel will review the past ten years of Jewish activity in Palestine dating from the time of the Balfour Declaration, November 2, 1927.

Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of the World Zionist Organization, who has just completed a tour of the colonies and settlements in Palestine, has sent a message to the conference in which he urges that still greater efforts be made by American Zionists to aid the Palestine work. Messages have also been received from Lord Balfour, Herbert Samuel and Lloyd George.

This is the third conference since the inauguration of the United Palestine Appeal. A new National Chairman and Administrative Committee to conduct campaigns for the United Palestine Appeal during the coming year will be chosen at the conference.
