Opposition to Soviet Communities Conference is Strong (Jewish Telegraphic Agency)
The Leningrad Kehillah was absolved by circles close to Rabbi Schneursohn from the accusation that it was responsible for instigating the arrest and exile of the famous Lubawitscher Rabbe, who has settled in Latvia.
The explanation was made in commenting upon reports which have appeared in the Jewish press that the Rabbi’s arrest was the result of a denunciation of the Rabbi to the Soviet authorities, because he had opposed the conference of Jewish kehillahs called by the Leningrad Kehillah to take place in that city on November 21.
It was explained here that it may perhaps be true that individuals of the kebillah in Leningrad may have had a hand in the Rabbi’s arrest, but the Leningrad kehillah as a whole endeavored to secure his release. It was added that the majority of the rabbis and communal leaders in Soviet Russia continue their opposition to the conference, regarding it as a dangerous step for Russian Jewry at the present time.
