The revival of the ritual murder accusation in the Lithuanian town, Schidlewe, threw the Jewish population of the town into panic. Serious danger of a pogrom developed when a mob surrounded the Jewish houses in the town, smashed windows and demanded the surrender of a Christian child who they alleged was stolen by Jews for ritual murder purposes.
The police of the neighboring town, Rassein, was called out to restore order.
