Lynn and Pittsfield Jewish Communities Have Fine Record of Activities (Jewish Dally Bulletin)

With the erection of the Temple Beth El the Jewish community of Lynn has five Orthodox synagogues and one Reform Temple. The Congregation An-she Sfard is one of the oldest synagogues in Lynn. It has secured a new rabbi from Paterson, N. J. The other synagogues are Congregation Ahabat Sholem, Congregation Argudas Achim, Congregation Argudas Israel, Congregation Bnai Jacob and the Temple Beth El. Its spiritual leaders are: Rabbi Osur Wolf Werner, Rabbi Essrog, Rabbi Wolf Gam and Rabbi Raphael Goldenstein.

Of the city’s population of 110,000 about 5 per cent is Jewish, and in every profession and business these 3,000 are well represented.

Five Jewish organizations receive support from the Community Fund. They are the Y.M.H.A., Orphan’s Relief, Ladies Aid Society, Ladies Sheltering Hand and Associated Charities.

The Lynn Y.M.H.A. is the community center which houses practically every Jewish organization. Philip Smith is president of the organization. The Young Women’s Hebrew Association has grown under the leadership of Mrs. Mary Feinstein.

Plans are under way for the erection of a $50,000 auditorium for the Hebrew school. The land was bought by the Ladies Hebrew School auxiliary of which Mrs. Louis Ravin is president.

The Jews of Lynn have nearly raised their quota of $25,000 for the United Jewish Campaign and the drive for $15,00 for the United Palestine Appeal will be held soon.

Charles Goldman, vice-president of the Y.M.H.A. and Temple Beth El, is the recognized leader of the Jewish community and one of the largest contributors to national and local funds. Associated with him is Henry Yozell, chairman of the Jewish Relief Drive; Michael Zack, chairman of the license commission, and vice-president of the Y.M.H.A.; Gabriel Mendelsohn of the Zionist Organization; Jacob Finkle, chairman of the Newsboys scholarship ?card; Joseph Butman, president of the Hebrew school.

The Jewish associations in Lynn are: Young Mens’ Hebrew Association, Young Women’s Hebrew Association, Junior Haddasah, Senior Haddasah, Bud Hadassah, Young Girls’ Hebrew Association, Primroses’ Girls, Orphan Relief, Jewish Relief, Zionists, Boy Scouts, Jecomen Club, Congregation Anshe Sfard Daughters of Israel, Ladies Hebrew School Auxiliary, Ladies Helping Hand Society, Ladies Aid Society, Young Mens’ Hebrew Aid Association, Menorah Club, Sisterhood of Temple Beth.
