United Synagogue Executive Council Meets in Boston (Jewish Daily Bulletin)
A more definite platform for Conservative Judaism was demanded at the conference of the executive council and the New England District of the United Synagogue of America held here. Moses Mishel, President of Temple Mishkan Tefila, Boston, urged the United Synagogue of America to define more concretely a platform for Conservative Judainsm.
S. Herbert Golden of New York, President of the Executive Council, opened the conference.
Rabbi Samuel Price of Springfield, Massachusetts, discussing the smaller communities said that rabbis were demanding salaries larger than could be paid by the smaller congregations, thus making it impossible for these communities to maintain a spiritual leader. He recommended that the United Synagogue of America send Rabbis to these communities four or five times a year.
Rabbi Alter F. Landesman discussed problems of education, Dr. Jacob Kohn reported on the college student activities, Rabbi Elias Margolis urged a uniform service in all Congregations and Rabbi Charles I. Hoffman spoke on publications. Rabbi Samuel W. Cohen, Executive Director, of the United Synagogue, reported on the Young People’s League.
The evening session was devoted principally to the organization of the New England District. Rabbi Elias Margolis was the principal speaker at the banquet given in honor of the delegates. Dr. Cyrus Adler who was to have been the principal speaker at the banquet, was unable to attend. Lewis Goldberg was elected President of the New England Conference, Rabbi H. H. Rabinovitz, Solomon Berman of Hartford, Conn., David R. Radovsky of Fall River, Rabbi Benjamin H. Birnbaum of Botston, Vice Presidents, and Mark Angell of Boston, Treasurer.
Resolutions providing that $20,000 be raised in New England for the support of the United Synagogues; that an office in charge of an Executive Director be established in Boston; and that graduates of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America be placed in pulpits vacant; and that small communities not in a position to maintain a Rabbi be assisted in the education of the young, were adopted. A resolution calling upon all Rabbis and Synagogues associated with the United Synagogue to support the United Palestine Appeal, was also adopted at the closing session.
