Discovery of Christian burial vaults under the building of the synagogue on Gogan street in Hull, Yorkshire, caused the rabbi of the congregation, Rabbi Schwartz, to suspend services.
The building was formely a Congregational Church and was converted into a synagogue fourteen years ago.
The trustees of the congregation declined to act upon the recommendation of the rabbi who demanded that the building be closed, but appealed to the Chief Rabbi, Dr. Joseph H. Hertz, for decision. The matter will come up in a few days before the Chief Rabbi’s Beth Din.
