A severe economic crisis was said to be the cause for a suicide epidemic which is spreading among the Jewish population of Galatz.
The suicide of three prominent Jewish merchants yesterday, Moses Assian, Braunstein and Mendel Goldstein, grieved many in the Jewish community.
The Galatz rabbinate issued an appeal today mourning the death of the three merchants and urging faith that the difficulties will be overcome. Those who commit suicide cannot, according to Jewish law, be given proper burial and they are buried in graves near the cemetery wall, the appeal warns.
