The draining of the marshy areas in Polysia would be the greatest undertaking of the kind in Europe, the Minister of Labor, M. Moraczewski, stated at a meeting of the Budget Commission of the Sejm, The plan ought to take about five years at a cost of about 1 1/2 million zlotys annually. The minister added that he has in mind a plan regarding the work to be carried out on the reclaimed land.
Deputy Trompczinski proposed that the work of draining the Polysian swamps should be carried on jointly with the Soviet Government, which is also interested in the area. The association between the two Governments, he said, would be both of practical and political importance. It would finally dispose of the rumors of war preparations between Poland and Russia. Deputy Trompczinski said that he had at one time discussed the scheme with the Soviet Foreign Minister, M. Tchitcherin, and with the late Soviet Minister in Warsaw, M. Voikov. Both had expressed their readiness for co-operation.
In Jewish circles it is not expected that the reclamation of the land will be allowed to benefit the large numbers of Jews who are anxious to be settled on the land.
The one-hundredth anniversary of Touro Synagogue, was observed in New Orleans with a three-day celebration.
On the last day of the celebration, the corner stone of the new Sunday school and social hall was laid.
Rabbi Louis Walsey of Philadelphia delivered the principal address.
Benjamin Berman, of Cincinnati, O. was unanimously endorsed by the Republican Party as a candidate for the Ohio State Senate.
Mr. Berman represented the Union Made Garment Manufacturers Association of America at the House and Senate Hearings in Washington, on the Hawes-Cooper bill concerning prison labor.
