An appeal to the Rabbinate of the United States for co-operation with the ministry of other sects and civic authorities throughout the country in the movement initiated by the National Committee, China Famine Relief for raising $10,000,000 to alleviate the suffering of 10,000,000 Chinese in Shantung and neighboring territory, has been issued by leading rabbis of New York, in conjunction with the Rev. Dr. S. Parkes Cadman, chairman of the National Committee.
The appeal which, declares “no narrow vision separates us from our brother man in his innocent suffering” in addition to the signature of Dr. Cadman, carries the names of Rabbi Nathan Krass of Temple Emanu-El; Rabbi David De Sola Pool, Spanish and Portugese Synagogue; Rabbi Steplren S. Wise, Free Synagogue; Rabbi M. S. Margolies, Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun, and Dr. Cyrus Adler, President of the Jewish Theological Seminary. The appeal reads as follows:
“In the hearts of all of us who inherit and love the old Hebrew Bible lives the daily prayer that we might ‘Feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick and set the captive free.’
“No narrow vision separates us from our brother-man in his innocent suffering. Our hearts are torn because of the harowing cries of despair that reach us daily from that vast romantic land of China where acute famine is engulfing millions of our kind. Mothers are drownging their little ones and fathers are selling their wives and daughters because of famine, while ravenous dogs hunt in packs, devouring human flesh.
“The recent suffering of our Jewish brethren in Europe brings vividly before us the horrors of famine and utter helplessness. We therefore plead with you to cooperate with the Ministry and civic authorities in your community that the cry of distress may not go unheeded.
“Please write us that you are taking action in your city for this nonpolitical, non-sectarian and humanitarian cause, that the will of our Father in Heaven may be realized on earth.”
The appeal has been sent out to 1.200 Rabbis in all parts of the United States.
Judge Eil Frank, of the Supreme Bench of Baltimore, Md. has been named by Mayor William F. Broening as a member or an advisory commission, composed of experts, to act on the $22,000,000 improvement project of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company.
