Pittsburgh Zionist leaders will be hosts to four separate afiiliated groups when the Zionist Organization of America, the Senior Hadassah, women’s Zionist body, the Junior Hadassah, and the Avukah, Student’s Zionist Federation, meet in annual conventions in the William Penn Hotel here beginning June 27 and continuing through to July 3. The coming convention of the Zionists will be the thirty-first annual national one, and is expected to be the most important one in the history of the organization in this country.
The Pittsburgh committee is now completing arrangements to handle all incoming delegates, officers, and friends. A pre-conference will be held on Friday, June 29, and Saturday evening, June 30, and will be followed with the official opening of the convention on Sunday, July 1.
Adolph Edlis, general convention chairman, has appointed the following committee heads: Emil Steinbach, reception; William Shiff, program; Rev. M. Ginsburg, propaganda; A. H. Vixman, decorations; Max Azen. finance; and I. A. Swiss. Oscar Robbins, Louis Borkon, and O. Robin, publicity heads. The Pittsburgh representatives to the convention have already ben selected and are S. L. Fuss. Adolph Edlis, Emil Steinbach. H. Arenson, H. M. Caplan. Max Engleberg. Charles J. Rosenbloom, Dr. M. B. Lichtenstein, Rev. Ginsburg. Max Azen, and the alternates are David Busis. I. A. Wasser. Max Shapiro, Nathan Deemer. Dr. S. Feigin. N. Savage. William Lando. I. Rubin. B. Pearlman, and D. Phillips.
The Senior Hadassah and the Junior Hadassah will hold their conventions simultaneously starting June 27 and continuing on the next two days. Over 600 Senior Hadassah delegates representing 293 chapters and a membership of 37.000 women throughout the United States are expected to attend the women’s convention which will be the fourteenth annual meeting of the Senior Hadassah. Racille Srolovitz. Goldie Snyder and Sarah Greenberg, of the Junior Hadassah Pittsburgh unit, will care for 300 delegates representing 200 units with a combined membership of 15.000. Flora Snyder of this city is national Junior Hadassah president.
Avukah, Student Zionist Federation. will hold its third annual meeting on June 28, 29 and 30. One of the outstanding problems to be cleared up will be that of the advisability of entering into Palestine work.
Twenty-three Pittsburgh orthodox congregations were represented at a recent meeting in the Hebrew Institute called for the purpose of organizing an Agudath Kehillah. Union of Coagregation thens, in the city and vicinity. Rabbi S. B. Friehan of Congresgation Peak Zedeek sponsor of the organization, opened the meeting by making temporary appointment’s and outlining the needs for an Agudath Kehillath in Plusburgh. Constitution and Kashruth committees were named and a date set for an organization meeting.
A parade from the old synagogue to the new edifice now under construction will feature the corner stone laying ceremonies of Congregation Poale Zedeck this Sunday afternoon. The new synagogue to be of tile, brick and stone construction, will cost approximately $200,000. and will contain a hall for social gatherings, religious school, and an an auditorium for religious services, as well as numerous study and recreational rooms.
