In the elections to the General Council of the Salonica Chamber of Commerce which took place yesterday. only ten Jews were returned as against fourteen at the last election out of the total number of fifty members. The result is taken as indicating the extent to which the Jews are losing ground daily in Salonica, even in commerce, where they are most numerous.
Nevertheless. the “Macedonia,”which is now very influential as the leading Venizelist organ in Macedonia, complains that three Jews have been re-elected as the representatives of the cloth merchants, although this corporation is composed almost entirely of Jews. The industrial section of the Council, which previously had two Jewish members. has no Jewish members now. There are also no Jewish members in the tobacco section.
