“The effect of the Jewish back-to-the soil movement in Russia will prove a decisive factor in the ultimate settlement of the Jewish question all over the world,” declared Professor John Dewey, noted American philosopher and educator in the course of an interview with Miss Betty Ross, American journalist before his departure from Moscow. In a cable made public by David A. Brown, national chairman of the United Jewish Campaign, Professor Dewey is quoted as follows.
“The Jewish land colonization in the Ukraine and the Crimea is a valuable contribution to the sociological experiment going on within Russia. The enterprise, guided by Americans, free from all political complications, and harmonious with the Soviet policy of granting cultural autonomy to the minority nationalities, should be successful.
“The results of the Jewish colonization work will show that certain characteristics which are attributed to racial origin are in reality due to social environment,”‘ Professor Dewey continued. “I am confident that after the period of struggle and adjustment the Jewish colonists will become efficient agriculturists.
“The colonization is proving a stable factor in the social organization of the country and should influence Jews and popular opinion all over the world. One must recognize the great part American Jews are playing in this vast undertaking. It is their support which supplies to the colonists their real roots in the soil.”
Anthony de Rothschild, of London, England, a partner in the famous international banking concern of N. H. Rothschild & Sons, arrived in Montreal on Wednesday, accompanied by Mrs de Rothschild and D. E. and Mrs. de Becker. The party will make a Deminion-wide tour of Canada. Mr. Rothschild has visited Canada twice before, and is now making a pleasure trip.
The Retail Merecharis Association of the district around Quebre is seeking to have all the stores even tobacco shops, closed on Sunday. At a recent meeting it was brought to the attention of the Association that one hundred and fifty complaints have been registered at the Quebee City Hall against stores which sold provisions on Sunday the majority of them grocers. Although Quebec has but a small Jewish population the strict enforcement of this law will be particularly felt by a number of Jewish grocery stores which enter to Jewish clientele
Rabbi Wolf Gold of Congregation Shamei Amunah and vice-president of the Mizrachi sailed for Europe on the steamer Aquitania.
During his trip abroad Rabbi Gold will attend the Mizrachi conference opening in Danzig, August 19.
