One of the methods employed by the Russian Communists in combatting the Zionist movement in the Soviet Union is depicted in a despatch received here from the Ukraine.
According to the despatch, agents of the Ogpu, Soviet political police in Braclaw-Podol, obtained a list of the membership of the local Zionist youth organization, B’nai Zion. Each young man whose name appeared on the list was visited by an Ogpu agent and under the threat of imprisonment was compelled to sign a statement renouncing his Zionist affiliation and promising to abstain from Zionist work in the future.
Congressman Meyer Jacobstein will not again be a candidate for Congress. It was stated in Rochester that before his departure for Canada, the Representative informed Harlan W. Ripley. Democratic leader of Monroc County, that he will not return to Rochester until after the period for filing designating petitions for the primaries has expired, that is, until after August 21.
It was also stated that Judge Ripley will attempt to get Congressman Jacobstein to return to Rochester in time to be named a candidate.
Congregation Beth David of Lynbrook, L. I. laid the cornerstone for its new synagogue yesterday.
The synagogue will be two stories in height. Meeting rooms, a kitchen and offices will be on the first floor. The second floor will be taken up by an auditorium with a capacity of 500.
A lease valued at $10,000 was presented to the Brooklyn Federation of Jewish Charities as the first donation to its Twentieth Anniversary Appeal which formally opens Oct. 17.
The donation was made by the Court and Montague Street Renlty Corporation through Morris White, President.
The federation, in its Twentieth Anniversary Appeal, is seeking $1,035,000.
Rabbi Herman M. Coben, who for nine years has been the spiritual leader of Congregation Keneseth Israel-Beth Sholom. Kansas City. Mo., has resigned his position to accept the pulpit of Congregation Temple of Aaron. St. Paul. Minn. Rabbi Cohen will assume the duties of his new position September 1.
