Rabbi Felix Goldman was fined twenty-five marks or a day in jail for keeping his son from school on Saturdays.
According to the Saxon law, Jewish children are compelled to attend school on Jewish holidays and Saturdays. On being fined by the City Council, Rabbi Goldman appealed the case in court, claiming that Jewish parents are entitled to take their children to synagogue and also contending that the order compelling their school attendance on the Sabbath violates the Republican constitution which guarantees to all citizens the right of religious observance. Prussia, he added, releases Jewish children from school on the Sabbath since 1859.
Rabbi Goldman lost the appeal and the fine was imposed. He intends to take the matter to the Supreme Court and also to have it brought up in the Saxony Diet.
LEADERS PAY TRIBUTE TO DR. ISRAEL GOLDSTEIN
Dr. Israel Goldstein, president of Young Judaea, was the guest of honor at a dinner given Sunday night at the Hotel Astor.
Four hundred guests members of Young Judaea, representatives of Jewish educational institutions and friends of Dr. Goldstein, attended the dinner.
Outstanding leaders in New York’s civic and political life, as well as representatives of Jewish institutions, paid tribute to Dr. Goldstein on the occasion of his return from Palestine. Among the speakers who lauded him for his work in the pulpit and in the field of Jewish education were Col. Herbert H. Lehman. Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor of New York. Rabbi Jonah B. Wise. Loris Lipsky, Judge William M. Lewis, Jonah J. Goldstein, Dr. David de Sola Pool. Dr. Louis Finklestein and Sol M. Strock. Isadore D. Morrison was toastmaster.
OTTINGER FORMALLY NOTIFIED OF NOMINATION
The ceremony of formally notifying Attorney General Albert Ottinger of his nomination for Governor by the Republican Party was held last night in the grand ballroom of the Hotel Aston.
F. Trubee Davison. Assistant Secretary of War who served as permanent Chairman of the Republican State Convention at Synacase which nominated Mr. Ottinger delivered the notification address. Mr. Ottinger delivered his speech of acceptance the address being broadcast.
