The intricacies of the Jewish problems in Palestine were brought home to Sir John Chancellor, the new High Commissioner, when he recently received a delegation representing the Orthodox Agudath Israel, headed by Rabbi Chaim Sonnenfeld.
The delegation urged the High Commissioner to officially recognize the ultra-Orthodox Kehillah of Jerusalem as independent of the Kenesseth Israel, which is recognized under the Palestine Communities Ordinance.
It was reported in the Jerusalem press that the High Commissioner stated he had previously believed that it will be possible to unite the Jewish community in Palestine. He now sees, however, that it is almost impossible and will therefore do his best to satisfy both parties. The Agudath Israel delegation told the High Commissioner that the ultra-Orthodox community will cooperate with the Vaad Leumi, the National Council of Palestine Jews, whenever possible, in matters pertaining to the municipality, in the Western Wall question, but what it seeks to protect is its religious convictions.
