A Union of Sephardic Congregations for the promotion of religious interests of Sephardic Jews was formed at a conference held at the Spanish and Portuguese-Synagogue, New York. It was estimated that there are at least 40,000 Sephardim in the United States, besides a number in Canada, Mexico and other parts of the continent.
Among the immediate tasks which the Union-has set itself are those of training or providing adequate Chazanim for the Sephardic congregations, the provision of trained Sephardic rabbis, and a uniform Sephardic prayer book.
Officers elected were Dr. D. de Sola Pool, president; Dr. Solomon Solis-Cohen of Philadelphia, Charles Sebag Montefiore of Montreal and Samuel Coen of New York City, vice-presidents; Matthew Levy of New York City. treasurer; and Simon S. Nessim of New York City, secretary. Members of the board of directors are: Robert Franco, Henry S. Hendricks, Joseph Joseph, John H. Levy, Nathan Nasser, Captain N. Taylor Phillips, of New York City; Dr. Cyrus Adler and Dr. Abraham A. Neumann, of Philadelphia; and the Rev. Charles Bender, of Montreal.
