That the British government intends to give up its mandate over Iraq was inferred from its report on the administration of Iraq to the Council of the League of Nations.
The “Daily Mail,” commenting editorially on the report, says: “The report will markedly strengthen public feeling against the retention by Great Britain of the mandates in the Middle East, which have been an unceasing cause of expense and anxiety. Taxpayers in this country, who have never understood why we went to Palestine and Iraq, are now asking why we remain there.
“The British public has most convincing evidence that neither the Jews nor the Arabs are satisfied in Palestine, and we must be prepared at any moment to hold that country by armed force, which may be required to be on a larger scale than at present. The British taxpayer will never tolerate a waste of money on wars in regions where neither political interest nor trade counts seriously. Our present high reputation for the conduct of foreign affairs will suffer if we do not withdraw from the Middle East mandates and clear out of Palestine and Iraq.” the “Daily Mail” argues.
The Paris correspondent of the London “Daily Express” says that Poland is ready to relieve Great Britain of the responsibility of looking after Palestine. An indirect suggestion is made by Poland that if Great Britain returns the Palestine Mandate, it should be handed to the republic having the largest Jewish population in Europe.
