With the approach of the High Holy Days, the Palestine Emergency Fund is expected to pass well over the $2,000,000 mark by Yom Kippur.
The total is well over the $1,700,000 mark, Mr. Brown pointed out. It will not be difficult, he believes, to complete the second million, in view of the special High Holiday appeals which will be made in synagogues and temples.
In all a total of 1,328 communities have made some contributions to the fund. The totals as made public this week were as follows: Greater New York, $596,950 and $110,884 from 122 cities and towns in the rest of the state. Pennsylvania is next with $89,494 from Philadelphia and $41,489 from the rest of the state. Ninety-eight communities in New Jersey have contributed $95,039, including $5,778 from Jersey City, $13,125 from Paterson, and $27,840 from Newark.
Illinois ranks next. Including Chicago, which in addition to Mr. Rosenwald’s gift of $25,000 has given $68,700, there has been received from 63 communities in that state $78,989. Connecticut comes next with $41,292 from 40 communities, toward which Hartford gave $8,805 and New Haven $7,787. California’s contribution is $32,795, of which Los Angeles gave $15,796.
