Ninety-five per cent less Jews than in previous years were elected to office during the present municipal elections in Lithuania. This is due chiefly to Premier Waldemaras’ law merging all villages and suburbs with the surrounding towns into one municipality thus extensively reducing the percentage of Jews in the towns. In places where there were formerly from ten to fifteen Jewish counsels elected there were but one or two elected.
The extension of town boundaries also means a larger budget without any increased income for the towns since the suburbs and villages are poor. Kovno itself will have to increase its expenditures by 800,000 lit. This huge financial burden will have to be borne largely by Kovno whose population is largely Jewish.
