58 Attacks on Jews in Jerusalem Since Sept. 1; Only Twelve Arrests Made

Only twelve arrests have been made, with but a single conviction, in connection with the fifty-eight attacks against Jews in Jerusalem since September 1.

Details have only now become available, disclosing that there were eleven shootings in that period and forty-seven cases of individual assault.

The records show that on September 5, immediately following the period of open rioting, an Arab fired upon a 70-year-old Jew standing nearby an Arab policeman. From that time on, attacks were recorded on the dates as follows:

Sept. 7 there was shooting in Givat Shaul, a Jewish quarter of Jerusalem, in which several houses were damaged by the bullets.

Sept. 11, there was shooting in the old city of Jerusalem, in the vicinity of the police station.

Sept. 12, Jewish houses fired upon near Bircath Ha’Sultan. One arrest was made.

Sep. 13, Jewish houses in the Old City were stoned and looted.

Sept. 19, a butcher’s apprentice was stabbed. The same day an American Jew was stoned near the Wailing Wall.

Sept. 20, a Jew named Trachtenberg was stabbed. The same day eitht Arabs attacked and clubbed Jacob Goldberg near Kiryath Moshe.

Sep. 25, a Jew named J. Cohen, 65 years old, was stabbed and succumbed to his wounds. One Arab was arrested but discharged for lack of evidence. No others were apprehended. The same day, Rabbi Baba was stoned in the Old City, while shooting occurred in Neve Shaanan.

Sept. 26, shooting occurred in the Bukharin quarter, and a Jewish porter was stoned on Amerian Street.

Sept. 28, there was shooting in the Shneller quarter.

Sept. 29, two Arabs attacked two Yemenites near Beth Hamit Ba’Chaim, who were rescued by a Christian passerby.

Oct. 2, Arabs clubbed a Miss Landau in the bazaar. One arrest was made.

Oct. 6, shooting occurred in the Rehavia quarter.

Oct. 7, houses in the Georgian quarter were looted.

Oct. 8, shooting occurred in the Sanhedria quarter. In addition Jews were fired on from an auto near Talpioth. The police arrested the chauffeur, who claimed that the child shot with a toy revolver. The chauffeur was fined one pound, while the child received three lashes.

Oct. 10, an Arab knifed and wounded a Jew in the Old City. The suit brought by the Jew has been thrice postponed because Arab witnesses and the policeman have failed to make an appearance. No decision has as yet been handed down in the case. The same day, a Jew was stoned near the Damascus Gate, while an Arab policeman, wearing no badge number, failed to go to his aid.

Oct. 11, shooting occurred in Nachlat Zadok.

Oct. 15, shooting occurred in the Shneller quarter.

Oct. 16, a large Arab band attacked two Jewish riders near Katamon. The Jews were rescued.

Oct. 17, a 14-year-old Jewish boy was stoned in Nachlat Shivah.

Oct. 19, an old Jew was wounded.

Oct. 20, four Arabs attacked a Jew who was saved by a passing autoist.

Oct. 21, two Arabs beat and robbed a Jewess.

Oct. 23, passengers in an automobile fired upon a group of Jews, failing to wound them, however.

Oct. 27, the market of Charusch Smith was attacked and robbed. The Arab police did nothing to halt the attack or apprehend the perpetrators. The same day a Jew in the New Market was beaten. Not only did the Arab policeman, who wore no badge number, fail to come to their succor, but he took a hand in the beating, in which two were wounded. Although the attackers were identified, they remain unpunished.

Oct. 28, M. Chamika was beaten in the Old City, while the Arab policemen, No. 16 and 27, looked on. The Jewish Corporal Charlik arrested one of the assailants, who have not yet gone on trial.

Oct. 29, a boy was stabbed and beaten in the Old City and Ben Zion Shosani was wounded.

Oct. 30, Ben Yizchak was clubbed on King David Street. Three were arrested, but the trial has been postponed because the Attorney-General did not appear. On the same day, Shlomo Fernandes was wounded in a Christian shop and two Arabs, attacked and robbed a Jewess near Zion Hall.

Oct. 31, shooting occurred on the hill opposite Givat Shaul.

Nov. 2, Yizchak Mizrachi was shot with a revolver on Neidan Street. The attacker was arrested. The same day there was firing from Lifta on Givat Shaul. The police conducted a search but found no traces of those responsible.

Nov. 3, Jewish workers on the Bethlehem road were shot at from ambush. Agroup of Arabs were seen escaping with a gun.

Nov. 4, an Arab student stoned a Jewish passerby at Herod’s Gate.

Nov. 5, Ben Hillel was wounded in the Old City. Two were arrested. Thetrial is still to be held.

Nov. 6, Arabs attacked Jewish witnesses in the Ben Hillel case, beating them in the presence of policemen.

accompanied an Arab who had purman brutally beat a Jewish youth who chased Jewish goods and who feared attack by the Arab boycott pickets.

Nov. 9, shooting occurred in the Rehavia quarter, and the watchman at the Diskin orphanage was fired upon.

Nov. 10, an Arab auto tried to run down three orphans of the Diskin orphanage, at whom they also fired. One of the Arabs told the police that he was merely trying out a revolver. There were no arrests.

Nov. 11, the Arab boycott agitators beat Moshe Elbas as he walked out of a Jewish soy, mistaking him for a Christian.

Nov. 12, Dr. Ticho was stabbed. An Arab was arrested and released on bail.

Nov. 24, Attorney-General Norman Bentwich was shot in the corridor of the government offices. His assailant was immediately arrested.

This list does not include attacks outside of Jerusalem of which there were scores, including the murder of a woman at Hedera and many shootings from automobiles on lonely roads.
