The following communique has been received by the Roumanian Legation here from Bucharest with regard to the recent student disturbances at the University of Jassy:
“The authorities of the University of Jassy convened on Christmas Eve and passed the following sentences in the cases of the Christian students found guilty of the recent outbreaks: two students, among whom was the vice-president of the Christian Students’ League, were expelled from the University for having organized anti-Semitic demonstrations as well as another demonstration against the University’s dean; two others were expelled for one year for having beaten several Bessarabian students who disobeyed the orders of the student strike leaders.
“Regarding the incidents which occurred at the Institute of Chemistry, University authorities will take the necessary steps after the committee of inquiry of the Institute will have sent in its final report.
“The same authorities have examined the memorandum presented by the Christian Students League and decided to cancel the authorization to function of the said League, owing to disturbances caused by some of its members, and to take new steps for the preservation of order in the University. The University authorities refused to discuss the students’ request regarding the adoption of the numerus clausus and will convene again on January 7 for the reopening of the classes.”
