In a letter addressed to Cardinal Pompili, Vice-General of Rome, the Pope yesterday protested aaginst religious persecution in Russia and called on Catholics throughout the world to pray for the cessation of “the moral destruction of a sixth part of the globe. The Pope also invited the entire world to join on March 19 an appeal against “the undermining of religion, the forced apostasy, the mockery of religious ceremonies and desecrations.”
It is being recalled here that during the Genoa Conference of 1922 when the Vatican participated in the negotiations the Union of Polish Rabbis and also the Agudath Israel appealed to the Vatican to use its influence with the Soviets in order to obtain a cessation of persecution of Judaism in Russia.
