An effort by the “New York World” to whitewash Vincent Sheean, who was its Palestine correspondent during the August riots there, is seen by the “Day” as a result of the “World’s” editorial of this week in which it was stated that the report of the Inquiry Commission, which says among other things that the Jewish demonstration in front of the Wailing Wall on August 15th was one of the contributing causes of the riots, corroborates Mr. Sheean’s reports and exonerates him and the “World” from all accusations of anti-Jewish bias which were made at that time.
“During the time of the riots Mr. Sheean wrote more venomous things about the Jews than all the other non-Jewish correspondents put together,” says the “Day.” “During the entire period of the riots he sat in the Hotel Allenby in Jerusalem, and from there pulled the wires between the Arab Executive and the newspapermen who arrived, serving as publicity agent for the Arabs. And even now this man is traveling through America and giving lectures, in which he places the blame for the blood that was spilled upon the Jewish people.
“After the ‘Day’ came out against Sheean, the ‘World’ realized its mistake and found another correspondent
in Palestine, who was not so loath to tell the whole truth if it was in favor of the Jews and against the Arabs. But now it seems that the ‘World’ again wishes to whitewash Sheean and return to its former anti-Jewish attitude with regard to the Jewish Homeland.
“If this is the purpose of the ‘World’—then why hide it? Let us Jews at least know with whom we are dealing when we are told about the liberalism and progressiveness of the paper which was founded by Joseph Pulitzer and whose editorials are now being written by Walter Lippman.”
