All the philanthropic and educational efforts of Omaha Jewry will be consolidated as a result of action taken last week at a meeting called by the Citizens’ Committee of the Jewish Communal Survey, representing practically every Jewish organization in the city. The meeting was called by Harry H. Lapidus, chairman of the Citizen’s Committee, who presided.
As a result of recommendations which were adopted, the Omaha Jewish Welfare Federation will be enlarged and be given more power. The Community Chest will be asked to support the following activities: Federation Relief Department, child care work and the Jewish Community Center Maintenance Budget. A Jewish Welfare Fund will be established to take care of national institutions, the Wise Memorial Hospital, the Old People’s Home, the City Talmud Torah and the Jewish educational work. It is estimated that a sum of $25,000 will be needed for those institutions. It was also suggested that the Allied Jewish Campaign be included in the drive, which would necessitate an additional $15,000.
An educational committee, which is to direct, coordinate and expand the work of the Jewish schools of Omaha, will also be created. This will include the Talmud Torahs, Jewish Community Center and Temple Israel Sunday School. The committee which drafted these recommendations consisted of Henry Monsky, chairman; Dr. Philip Sher, William L. Holzman, Harry Silverman, Harry Wolf, Harry Lapidus and Sam Beber.
