Great Britain will be far more firm in the future than in the past in handling disturbances in Palestine, declared General Jan Christian Smuts, former premier of South Africa, friend of Zionism and a member of the British war-time cabinet that is sued the Balfour Declaration, speaking today at a Zionist banquet here.
General Smuts pointed out that the defence of the Suez Canal lies not along the route of the Canal itself but in Palestine. He said that if “Great Britain wants security for the Suez Canal it must be more careful about the distribution of its forces in Palestine, for then a recrudesence of the disturbances will not be repeated.”
