The Harris bill, with all its amendments, was recommitted to the Senate Immigration Committee yesterday by a vote of 34 to 30. In the committee it will have to be reconsidered and acted upon again before the Senate can take it up.
The general impression is that the Senate has become so confused in the past few days of hectic amendments and cross amendments that it was compelled to recommit the bill in order to get out of the confusion.
There is a strong possibility that the recommittment will serve to kill the measure for this session although this is not yet quite certain.
No arrangement for a meeting of the Senate Immigration Committee has been made for consideration of the recommitted Harris bill and its various amendments containing the amendment reducing the annual quota immigration to 80,000, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency is informed. A meeting probably will be held next week.
Senator Harris stated today following the Senate’s vote recommitting the #ll to the Committee that he fully int#ds to continue pressing for action on ### bill. Prior to the recommittment vo#e, Senator Harris offered an amendment which would have technically perfec#d Swanson’s amendment restoring the #ational origins plan, but on an annual quota immigration of 82,000. The Senate, however, instead of acting on this amendment, voted to recommit the bill.
