A plea to support the Palestine Lighthouse was made by Dr. Stephen S. Wise at the luncheon of that organization which was held at the Hotel Astor Thursday. Fifteen hundred women attended the luncheon, at which other speakers included: Mrs. Charles Cohen, chairman of the luncheon committee; Gustavus A. Rogers, who acted as toastmaster; Mrs. Samuel D. Friedman, president of the Palestine Lighthouse, Dr. David de Sola Pool and Charles Topkis.
Tribute was paid to the efforts of Mrs. Charles Cohen, the former Jessie Lamport, who, as chairman of the luncheon committee, was instrumental in making it a success. The luncheon marked the initiation of a drive for membership for the only institution in Palestine that educates and trains the Jewish blind.
Though founded as a non-sectarian organization the Palestine Lighthouse was forced recently to limit its efforts to helping the Jews. Plans now under way, will, it is hoped, conclude with the opening of a new building which will relieve the congestion and accommodate a larger group.
Speakers at the luncheon stressed the need for the work now being done by the Palestine Lighthouse and urged those present to cooperate in the work.
