The Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations of Chicago, responsive to the fact that only 9 per cent of the Jewish children of Chicago receive a Hebrew education and that many of the independent Talmud Torahs are in financial straits has organized a Vaad Ha-Chinuch with N. H. Bolotin as chairman, B. Morris and A. Gerstein as vice chairmen and A. Shapiro as secretary.

An appeal will be made on the second day of Shuvuouth in the synagogues, when the aims and aspiration of the Vaad for Jewish education will be explained. Arrangements are also being made by the women’s auxiliaries for a $25 luncheon at which one thousand women are expected to attend. Mrs. L. Cohen will be chairman of this affair.

The Vaad Ha-Chinuch is to consist of representatives of the Kehillah, representatives of the Misrad Horabbonim and a representative of each Talmud Torah. The Vaad Ha-Chinuch will introduce a common curriculum of study in all its constituent Talmud Torahs. The Vaad will also attempt to stabilize the financial conditions of the Talmud Torahs.

The slogan of the Vaad is “A Jewish education for every Jewish child in Chicago.” Up to date, thirteen Talmud Torahs have been affiliated with the Vaad.
