A decision to take stern measures that will put an end to the recurring and spreading anti-Semitic disturbances that have been agitating Roumania for more than a month was made at a conference here today of cabinet officials and other high government representatives together with members of Parliament from the affected districts, under the chairmanship of Vayda Voyovod, minister of the interior.
The causes of the peasants’ dissatisfaction which make them a prey of anti-Semitic agitators who goad them into attacking the Jews and the actual disturbances themselves were discussed at the meeting. While no announcement was made as to what form the measures to stamp out the trouble will take, an inspector of the minister of justice, M. Ferner, secretary of state for the ministry of justice and M. Ioanitzescu have been dispatched to Bukowina to put the measures into immediate effect.
The conference was attended by Professor Andrei, minister of education Costascescu, the secretary of the minister of justice M. Paleologue and many deputies from Bukowina where the troubles have been occurring. It was said that not only is the government determined to suppress the agitation and the attacks but it plans to uproot the causes which led to the disturbances.
The measures that the government is now about to take in connection with the growing attacks on the Jews in Bukowina have been urged for many weeks not only by the Jews and their parliamentary spokesmen but by practically every leading newspaper in the country. King Carol has several times promised that he will shortly take steps to end once and for all the Jewish question. In Jewish circles here it it hoped that the decisions emanating from the conference will be the first step in carrying out the royal promises.
