A letter protesting the attacks on the Jews in Roumania and the failure of the authorities to take adequate measures to suppress the disturbances was sent today to the Roumanian premier, Julius Maniu, by Sylvain Levy on behalf of the Alliance Universelle Israelite.
M. Levy’s letter states, “The serious events which have taken place in the last weeks in different sections of Roumania, especially in Bukowina and Transylvania, have grievously harmed the life and fortunes of the Jewish population and are provoking deep concern in the Jewish world, especially in France.
“The surprise is still greater because when the King ascended the throne he solemnly declared that he would watch over the rights of all subjects equally, without regard to creed. The Borscha fire, the wild aggressions in Kimpolung, Suceava and elsewhere have caused a state of panic among Roumanian Jewry. On the other hand it is serious to notice that the authorities did not take preventive measures and are not repressing the disorders.
“This leniency leads to the impression that the Roumanian Jews are exposed to worse treatment than other subjects. We convey to the government our deepest regret at the unjustifiable violence committed against a peaceful population and we ask that an end be made to the propaganda of hatred which is also prejudicing Roumanian interests.
“We demand that measures be taken to guarantee life and property and also to recompense the victims. In view of the coronation declaration made last June we remain confident that the Roumanian authorities will do their duty.”
