M. Mahraun, leader of the League of German Youth, which is one of the constituent elements in the newly organized Constitutional Party, today declared that while his organization has no Jewish members it recognizes the equality before the law of German citizens of the Jewish faith and condemns anti-Semitism. He made a similar declaration on his own behalf.
Defending the citicism that has been levied against the League of German Youth because it does not accept Jews as members, M. Mahraun said that the German youth of Christian extraction are just as much entitled to have a society composed exclusively of their own race as are the Jewish youth. At the same time, he pointed out, the League of German Youth does not approve of “the anti-Germanism that exists in certain Jewish circles.”
When the Constitutional Party was first organized and the League of German Youth joined it was feared that the more nationalistically inclined members of the League might give the party an anti-Semitic tone. At a recent meeting of the liquidated Democratic Party leading members of the Democrats discussed the possibility of affiliating with the new group. At this meeting Erich Koch-Weser, a prominent Democrat, gave assurances that the new party would not be anti-Semitic and also said that the League of German Youth was not anti-Semitic.
