The outdoor campaign of the United Yeshivah Chest, a federation of 10 Jewish day schools, combined with elementary and high schools, with an enrollment of 5,000 children, proved successful, when the effort was launched last Sunday, Tisha B’Ab.
A considerable amount was raised towards the $500,000 needed to cover the combined deficit of the 10 yeshivahs. The total of the contributions, mainly in small denominations, included also more formidable subscriptions. According to William Weintraub, Chairman of the Executive Council of the United Yeshivah Chest, the results were extremely gratifying, and constituted an earnest of the great possibilities that lie ahead for the United Yeshivah Chest, when its campaign will unfold with full strength during the month of Elul, when over 500,000 men and women will visit the cemeteries.
One thousand big, iron chests were placed last Sunday on the grounds and in the vicinity of 20 Jewish cemeteries within the metropolitan area. One thousand volunteers supervised the collections and formed a Guard of Honor around the chests. Ignoring the fast, and the unbearable heat which prevailed, the volunteers, including many girls, remained at their posts from 9 A. M. until 7 P. M. Young Israel, the orthodox Jewish youth organization, furnished the bulk of the volunteers. Elderly men and women, as well as prominent business and professional men, who had enrolled in the United Yeshivah Chest Guard of Honor, took a leading part in the collections.
