Roumanian Envoy Expresses Hope Attacks Will Disappear and Agitation Be Ended

Hope that as a result of the strong measures taken by the Roumanian government to definitely put a stop to the anti-Semitic disturbances the outbreaks will gradually disappear, and confidence that the agitation will shortly cease was expressed late Wednesday afternoon by Carol Davila, Roumanian minister to the United States in a statement issued after a delegation from the American Jewish Congress had called upon him at the Ritz Carlton Hotel to urge immediate efforts on the part of the Roumanian government to suppress the anti-Semitic agitation and the attacks upon the Jews.

In a statement made on behalf of the delegation by Dr. Stephen S. Wise, honorary president of the American Jewish Congress, he recited a list of lamentable occurrences which have recently taken place in various parts of Roumania, causing much injury to Jews, bringing destruction to Jewish property and resulting in the state of uncertainty and mental anguish to the Jews of Roumania. Dr. Wise made reference to the pillaging which has been going on for many weeks, the burning of Borscha and the killing of the Jewish leader, Sholom Landau.

In a formal memorandum presented to M. Davila by Bernard Deutsch, president of the Congress, and signed by all members of the delegation, the Roumanian minister was requested to convey to his government the very imperative necessities of the situation which include the immediate liquidation of the various organizations which have been perpetrating and inciting the outrages, the suppression of all propaganda and the punishment of those guilty, prompt compensation to Jewish victims of the excesses, and an unequivocal declaration on the part of the government that will make absolutely clear its firm determination to assure the safety of Roumanian Jewry.

In addition to Dr. Wise and Mr. Deutsch, the delegation that waited on M. Davila was comprised of Judge Gustave Hartman, representing the Independent Order Brith Abraham. Leo Wolfson, president of the United Roumanian Jews of America, Herman Speier, executive secretary of that organization, Israel Thurman, Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum, Baruch Zuckerman and Bernard G. Richards, executive secretary of the Congress.
