The Austrian Heimwehr, Austria’s private nationalistic militia, is openly adopting an anti-Semitic character and may become a separate political party, the Socialist press here forecasts in commenting on the sudden resignation of the Heimwehr leaders, M. Steidle and M. M. Pfriemer, who have been replaced by Prince Stahremberg who now becomes the sole leader of the Heimwehr.
It is said that Prince Stahremberg has close connections with the Hitlerites in Germany. In other quarters, however, it is reported that Prince Stahremberg is seeking to restore peace between the Heimwehr and Chancellor Schober together with the big industrialists who are supporting the anti-Marxist parties without regard to religion. It is know, however, that the Heimwehr meetings under Prince Stamremberg’s leadership have been more anti-Semitic than those under the former leaders.
When Major Waldemar Pabst, ex-generalissimo of the Heimwehr, was expelled from Austria last June by Chancellor Schober as an undesirable alien it was expected to result in a weakening of anti-Semitism in the ranks of the Heimwehr, because Major Pabst favored close contact with Adolph Hitler and his anti-Semitic National Socialists in Germany. Shortly after Major Pabst’s expulsion, Dr. Steidle, now out as the Heimwehr leader, charged in the Austrian parliament that Chancellor Schober had been influenced by the larger “Jewish liberal dailies” in expelling Major Pabst.
