A fifty percent cut in its expenditures for Jewish colonization, trade education, cooperative work and other relief work in East European countries will be necessary by the All-World Ort, the society for the promotion of technical trades and agriculture among the Jews of Eastern Europe, because the minimum sum promised it by the Allied Jewish Campaign has not been paid.
This announcement was made at a press conference here by Drs. Aaron Singalovsky and David Lvovitch, Ort leaders, at a conference of press representatives. In the ensuing discussion a number of speakers declared that the curtailment of the Ort’s work represents a severe blow to East European Jewry. A number of the press representatives criticized the agreement between the Ort and the Joint Distribution Committee, a partner in the Allied Jewish Campaign.
The agreement between the Ort and the Joint Distribution Committee has nothing at all to do with the Allied Jewish Campaign. Of the $6,000,000 sought by the Campaign in the United States $3,500,000 is for the Joint Distribution Committee. The committee agreed to give the Ort a maximum of $200,000 if the full sum of $3,500,000 was raised. If the full sum is not raised the Ort is to get its pro rata share of what is raised, or 6 per cent. Thus far the Ort has received about $70,000 from the J. D. C.
Speakers at the press conference declared that the reconstruction work of the Ort is of such great importance that it should receive more than 6 per cent of the monies raised by the J.D.C. through the Allied Jewish Campaign. All were agreed that the J.D.C. should now assure the Ort the minimum required by it to continue its activities.
