At the suggestion of Dr. Julius Curtius, Germany’s foreign minister and the German representative at the Assembly of the League of Nations, the Assembly today decided to transmit the consideration of the minorities question to the Assembly’s sixth commission, the political commission. The matter of creating a permanent minorities commission is to be brought up.
The chairman of the sixth commission, to which Briand’s plan for a European federation may be referred, is Sir Francis Borden of Canada, who recently succeeded Raoul Dandurand as Canada’s representative in the Assembly. A lively discussion on the minorities question is expected because Germany, Hungary, Bulgaria and other states interested intend to propose new reforms in view of the insufficiency of the procedure and improvements in handling transgressions from the Minorities Treaties adopted at the Madrid session of the Council of the League of Nations last January.
J. F. Beelaerts van Blokland, Holland’s representative to the Assembly, today urged the importance of the minorities question.
