The efforts of the Arab Executive to settle the dispute between the Moslem and Christian Arabs which grew out of a street row over possession of a cemetery, a row in which a Christian-Arab was killed, have broken down. The Christian-Arab Bishop Hajjer today coldly received a peace deputation of the Executive consisting of Ragheb Bey Nashashibi, mayor of Jerusalem; M. Moghanem, secretary of the Executive, and Issa Elissa.
Bishop Hajjer accepted the Arab Executive’s expressions of regret over the killing of Jamal Bakhri the Christian-Arab editor, but declined all peace overtures. While the Moslem delegation was conferring with Bishop Hajjer a crowd of Christian Arabs outside shouted, “We do not want peace.” Acknowledging the failure of its mission the delegation returned to Jerusalem.
