All sections of the Palestine Jewish community will loyally adhere to the decision adopted by the Jewish National Council not to participate in the legislative council which the British government’s statement on policy proposes, a survey by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency tonight shows.
The B’rith Sholom, the group that has been actively propagating active measures for peace with the Arabs, and in which Dr. Judah L. Magnes, chancellor of the Hebrew University is a leader, today formally notified the Jewish National Council that no members of its organization would stand for election to the legislative council. The B’rith Sholom, also stated that none of its members will accept nomination by the government. The government’s statement provides for the “appointment of a requisite number of unofficial members in the event of one or more members
failing to be elected on account of the non-cooperation of any section of the population or for any other reason.”
The Palestine members of the Zionist Actions Committee meeting today in emergency session, among them M. M. Ussishkin, head of the Jewish National Fund, and Schmarya Levin, veteran Zionist leader and author, favor a World Zionist Congress immediately or else a Congress after Passover.
In the meantime the Arab press is jubilant at the bitter blow to Jewish aspirations. Not only is the Arab press expressing pleasure at the disappointment of the Jews but some of the papers are spreading unfounded reports. The Falastin printed a false report today that the Anglo-Palestine Company had shut off all credit. The same paper also falsely reported that disillusioned Zionists were thronging the steamship offices booking passage abroad.
